Hundred Days

12/25/10

Rime-coated trees sparkled in the sunlight this Christmas morning, making for an enchanting ride into Teton Village. At the base, families enjoyed Tram Jam renditions of holiday favorites as they made their way to the gondola. While most visitors cruised groomers, locals mined powder stashes on north-facing aspects just outside the gates.

The tragic irony of the holiday season is that as much as it invokes merriment and good tidings, it can also produce a degree of chaos. I do not mean to be a Grinch, or a Scrooge, or any other nefarious detractor from the Christmas cheer, but there was certainly an anxious buzz over town. So ... Read More

You can see the pleasant disbelief in the smiling faces shuffling through line, as they are greeted with yet another powder day. Little has to be said; a raise of eyebrows and or a shrug of shoulders suffice. This season can rouse an inkling of guilt, as if we snuck into some forbidden utopia, and ... Read More

Hundred Days

Gray light dulled the landscape, transforming the mountain into a Russell Chatham painting where heavy trees stood silhouetted in the mist like wintery apparitions. Snow collected at the cusps of runs, displaced by slashing skis and snowboards. Throughout the day, scattered snowfall assuaged the high tempo of late, lending a sense of calm to this ... Azure skies cut through the conifers, scattering a patchwork of shadows on the boot-pack up to the Crags from Apres Vous. Ascending, I overtook a Christmas-week-warrior keeled over his poles, sucking air through pursed lips. “It’s all worth it in the end, right?” he managed to ask between breaths. Nodding to the scene around ... Read More

Floating on snow, we achieve perfection; not in the sense of being flawless, but in the sense of being complete. In those serene moments of weightless descent, all wants, past and future, dissolve with the swoop of a deep turn. So today, we were perfect, gliding over the earth, indulging in the all powerful ... Few things deliver such potent doses of in-your-face living like powder skiing. This is happiness: pure, uncut, laugh-till-you-cry happiness. Each turn is an epiphany, consuming you with the undeniable truth that you are exactly where you are suppose to be. Everything …everything… washes away, leaving you nestled so deep in the moment that only ... Read More

Hundred Days

As Santa slipped out the trap door of the Tram, the merry ol’ melee of the holiday season was kicked off. Sporting the trendiest of one-piece throwbacks, holiday visitors scurried around the Village with skis sprawled awkwardly in their arms like a flailing child. Alas, the honeymoon is over. No more private gondolas. No more leisurely wake-ups. Nevertheless, Jacksonites have little to complain over as yet another storm approaches.

Fast groomers injected riders with a cheap shot of confidence as they mached GS turns down the mountain. Others retreated to Casper Woods where pockets of soft snow still remained for the taking. Hopefully, the din of artificial snowmaking upsets Mother Nature and beckons her snowy wrath. Come on Momma, show us how its done! ... Read More

Hundred Days

12/16/10

“Clear, cold and dry” is how Hemmingway would have put it today, as frigid temperatures were left in wake of the recent storm. While some riders feasted on left-overs, the ambitious trotted up bootpacks to plunder stashes buried in the Crags. Either way, everyone still sported the smiles of yesterday.
