In these dark days of measly snowfall and double digit minus temperatures, it’s easy to lose a sense of perspective. Of course we need a couple decent storms to roll through and beef up our meager base, but it could be worse. Much worse.

Taking the Headwall Head-On
According to a couple of members of the ski patrol I caught up with at the top of Apres Vous, four crust layers threaten the stability of this year’s snowpack thus far. In an effort to combat these weak layers, members of the patrol have diligently boot-packed and sidestepped prone areas such as at The Headwall, Tower III, and the Expert Shoots.

Not a Ticket to Ride
Barring the occasional job interview, no one in Jackson Hole really cares where you went to school. Come wintertime, avalanche education is the preeminent study in this valley. The classroom, though unforgiving, trumps any campus in the world. Unlike that liberal arts degree you may have eked out at some debt-incurring college all those years ago, avalanche awareness has the realest world application: It can save your life.
