US Ski Mountaineering National Championships

The 2012 U.S. Ski Mountaineering Championship was held right in our own backyard at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Most of us spend our winter days charging down the mountain chasing after friends or face shots. We’re all here for the same reason, 4,139 vertical feet of arguably the best downhill skiing in the country. But uphill?

Part 1

Before Joshua Simpson was a photographer in New York City, he was a snowboarder in Truckee, California. This past spring, Josh arrived in Jackson Hole on a mission to unite these two lifelong passions. While many a photographer could be found snapping away in Teton Village, Josh attracted more attention than most behind the camera.

Photo of the Day – U.S. Ski Mountaineering Championship

1/07/12 – Luke Nelson of Pocatello, ID, reaches the top of Rendezvous Mountain only to start his 4,139 ft. descent. Luke would go on to win first place in the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Championship held at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort with a time of 2:38:58.

With the mountain producing more core-shots than face-shots this winter, the only people working harder than Santa’s elves this holiday season were Jackson Hole’s ski tuners. Yet unlike the elves that are off sipping spiked eggnog on a beach somewhere, the ski tuners are still working overtime.

Photo of the Day – Avalanche beacon checkpoint

1/06/12 – On their way into the Jackson Hole backcountry, Charlie Senn along with Sam Allan get the green light from the avalanche beacon checkpoint. Several of these checkpoints have been installed at various access points to the backcountry thanks to the combined efforts of Outerlocal, Backcountry Access and Outdoor Research.

01/05/12 – Only two hours after being cleared by the doctor, Jedd Johnston makes his first turns of the ski season. Jedd had a meniscus repair back in October and has been looking forward to this day the minute he got out of surgery.
