07/15/13 – Summer fun at Leigh Lake

Last summer I did an over-night with some friends on Leigh Lake in Grand Teton National Park…we started planning our return trip before we even broke camp. Jumping on it early this year, we reserved our campsite before the lifts quit spinning at the Village, ensuring our site where the Caribbean meets the Tetons. With a little more experience this time around we had a solid six man crew, two nights, two paddle boards, one canoe, one kayak and one thing on our mind…unplug from the world for the next 48 hours!

We loaded the gear and hit the road early to maximize our beach time and beat the crowds to the String Lake parking area. After a quick paddle up String Lake and a pretty easy portage, we had the open, glassy waters of Leigh Lake all to ourselves. We landed on the beach and had the hammocks hung, ski poles planted and a cold PBR in hand around noon. Let me clarify, we weren’t planning to do any skiing on this particular trek into the Park, rather, a camp trip is simply not a real camp trip without a set of ski poles, two empty beer bottles and a frisbee. If you’ve got a better way to pass the time other than hucking a frisbee at some ski poles, sipping some beer with your buddies under a perfect summer sky (not to mention standing knee deep in crystal clear water under the Tetons), please let me know. A few other friends made the easy paddle across String and Leigh lakes to hang out for the day and soak some rays along with us. One of the best attributes of this site is its ease of access. You can paddle our hike out to this pristine beach setting in about an hour and still make it back before dark in the unfortunate case that you’ve got to be back in the office the next morning. 48 hours and three cans of SPF 30 later, it was safe to say we accomplished our mission to kick back and unplug for a couple days. In fact, all expectations were completely exceeded, again. Perfect weather, perfect water, the perfect view and a perfect group of friends made the perfect recipe for a perfect couple of days. Yes sir, next year’s trip is already in the planning stages.
