Hundred Days

02/25/11

The Mountain Pulse Jackson Hole

The stoke runs deep here in Jackson Hole, bridging geographic and generational gaps between skiers and riders. This fresh four inch morning, an old timer passed pleasantries with two visitors riding up Thunder Lift. She spoke exactly how you’d hope a Jackson Hole matriarch would, employing dated epithets to describe the “mighty Snake River” or these “grand mountains.” Pulling her neck warmer down, she reminisced of the old days: “I came here in ’72. Back then you could ski fresh powder all week. Now you can get it every day if you know where to go.” The entire ride up she entertained the Pennsylvania couple, enthusiastically sharing her story, and in turn, telling the tale of this community. Her zest for living in the Tetons poured out with every word, and confirmed that this truly never gets old.
